On November 1, 2018, Ivy Tech’s own President Sue Ellspermann met with students, Student Life, the Human Services Club, and other administration members for the Breakfast with the President, put on by our very own Student Government Association (SGA).

In this informal setting, President Ellspermann asked for the Ivy Tech services we appreciate, the ones we think need improvement, and discussed a five-year plan featuring our 8-week courses as one of the focal points. David Carpenter, Chair of Senate (SGA), was amongst the attendees there to enjoy the free breakfast (which who can turn down free food?) and the easygoing atmosphere with fellow Ivy Tech students and faculty. “I care about the future of Ivy Tech because as an adult returning to school, I want future students to feel comfortable in their academics,” said Carpenter.

This event is an opportunity to get involved in what is going on at Ivy Tech and get your voices heard. However, even if you were unable to attend this breakfast, opportunities are still available through joining the SGA, where you can assist in the next breakfast.

9 Tips for Success in Online Learning

30 Sep

My Post-9

by Megan Stephens |

Are you taking an online class this semester? Are you thinking about taking one soon? Online classes are a great way to learn and complete coursework in a great atmosphere while also juggling a busy schedule. Here are 9 tips to help you during online classes that will lead you to success:

  1. Time Management: Make sure to stay organized and build in time to study and complete assignments. Since there is no in-person lecture or mandatory time to learn, you have to build that time in yourself. Especially if you have work, kids, or other obligations, being able to manage your time well and stick to a schedule is key when completing online courses.

  2. Create a Study Space: It can be hard to focus when you are doing homework on the couch while watching TV. Instead, try creating a study space that allows you to turn off your TV or your phone, lay out your materials, and get to work. This can be any place from a desk in a separate room to a cleared off kitchen table. Just make sure it’s a comfortable learning environment.

  3. Explore the Course and Connect with Professors: Before the course starts or within the first few days of it starting, try to explore all the features on Ivy Learn and connect with the professor. Read through the syllabus, scroll through the modules, check any announcement, and introduce yourself to the professor. This way you can explore what you’ll be learning and have a strong start to the course.

  4. Reliable Technology and Internet: Make sure you have a reliable source of technology and internet when taking online classes. In most syllabuses, it is stated that reliable internet and technology is the responsibility of the student. Assignments that are not finished or turned in late due to technology malfunction or unreliable internet will land on the student’s responsibility. There are always computers with reliable internet on any Ivy Tech campus. Your local library is also a good place to check when in need of a computer with internet.

  5. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions: Whatever your professor’s preferred method of communication might be, don’t be afraid to contact them with whatever questions may you have. If you are struggling with a concept, let them know that you’re having a hard time. Although it might seem harder to reach out an get help on an online platform, your professor is always there to help you and give you additional resources.

  6. Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute: Finish and turn your assignments in early and allow room for any unplanned incidents that might arise (like technical malfunctions).

  7. Seek Support from Available Resources: Ivy Tech offers a technical support help desk as well as online tutors. These resources can be found in the course syllabus, on IvyLearn, or the MyIvy student dashboard.  When you’re having difficulties with the technology, make sure to contact your professor and use these resources.

  8. Make Sure To Move: Although online learning is great, it can lead to you sitting at a computer for long stretches of time. Make sure to give yourself breaks to stretch and move! Taking a walk, going for a bike ride, or playing with your dog are a few ideas to get you started; they are also great stress relievers.

  9. Enjoy the Learning Experience: Online classes are a great way to complete credits and get an education while working, parenting, and/or taking lots of in-person classes. They offer both flexibility and a great learning atmosphere. Enjoy the time you have learning and always strive to do your best!
