Dedication Ceremony for the Bowen Commons

21 Sep

On September 20th, Chancellor Kathy Lee presided over the dedication ceremony of the common area in the Illinois Fall Creek Center. This area will now be known as the Bowen Commons, in honor of the contribution from Robert Bowen for his wife, Terry Bowen, for her birthday. The Bowens have long been benefactors to Ivy Tech, and are mostly known for the Bowen Scholars program. Here is more on the Bowen program:

The Bowen Scholars program at Ivy Tech Community College is available approximately 50 hours per week and provides computer lab, academic advising, personal life coaching, links to community resources, monthly student meetings, cultural events, individualized tutoring, and opportunities for networking with peers, faculty and staff. Service activities are planned by Bowen Scholars. Several social activities are planned throughout the year and culminate with an annual reception in April. Financial support is contingent upon student program participation.

Would you like someone to buy half a building for you, or is that too much?

Putin America Down

12 Sep

We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.

Today, Vladimir Putin wrote an opinion editorial in the New York Times, in this editorial he cites that this is an international issue, and military action from the United States would subvert the United Nations’ authority, because the action would be unsanctioned by the Security Council. This is true, however Russia is a known ally of Syria, this is supported by Max Fisher and the Washington Post Foreign Staff’s The four reasons Russia won’t give up Syria, no matter what Obama does:

  1. Russia has a naval installation in Syria, which is strategically important and Russia’s last foreign military base outside the former Soviet Union.
  2. Russia still has a bit of a Cold War mentality, as well as a touch of national insecurity, which makes it care very much about maintaining one of its last military alliances.
  3. Russia also hates the idea of “international intervention” against countries like Syria because it sees this as Cold War-style Western imperialism and ultimately a threat to Russia.
  4. Syria buys a lot of Russian military exports, and Russia needs the money.

Again Putin states that “we must not forget God created us equal.” However, Russia was and still is criticized for their persecution of their non-heterosexual citizens, as demonstrated by David Horsey’s brilliant political cartoon and article in the Los Angeles Times: Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin at odds over Syria, gays and more.

So is this an international issue and not an American one? And should we be placated by Russian overtures? Comment below!
